The Wedding invitation. A wonderfully pleasant item to receive in the mail. We open it quickly to see who is getting married, when the marriage will take place and all the other essential pieces of information we need to know to get us where we need to be, at the right time to witness the event we were invited to attend. However, there is much more to the humble invitation than just relaying the who? where? when?
If the sole purpose of a wedding invitation was to relay information, then why do they even exist in our current society? Could we not just facebook the details, create a wedding website or sms our friends and family the relevant details? If the text is all that matters, why then do so many stationers exist? How on earth are they all still in business? The answer lies in the TRUE meaning of a wedding invitation.
Once the ceremony and receptions have been booked, most couples turn their attention to their invitations. They begin the task of going through wedding magazines or visiting websites until they decide on which invitation businesses they would like to contact to start the process. And then it begins. Some clients come and see us and they have no idea where to start. We play 20 questions until we get a feel for their personalities, colour schemes, likes/dislikes and we soon help them to choose a design. Others know exactly what they want. They have done hours of research so coming to us is just the formality of paying the deposit and getting started. At the other end of the spectrum are the attention to detail couples… We have had brides come to their appointment with folders of information – sample invitations from weddings they have attended, images from the web, fabric swatches to co-ordinate with the bridesmaids or for the exact shade of white to match their dress, pictures of the reception decor, sketches of ideas they dreamt of and the list goes on. No matter which category the brides fit into, they all share the common goal of wanting a particular kind of look for their invitation.
You see, the invitation is very important. It will be the very first clue for the guests as to what kind of a wedding it will be. The invitation should be consistent with the feel of the entire wedding. Whether the invitation is a simple card or a boxed treasure will generally be in line with how the couple want their day to be perceived. It is a reflection of their personalities, their style and will set the scene for what is to come.
I remember growing up as a little girl, I used to look at the invitation and I knew right away what the colour of the bridesmaids dresses were going to be and the general colour scheme of the wedding – why else would anyone choose hot pink card? It used to be the trend to have everything matching. I did it myself for my wedding with my lovely lavender invitations. Today, the trend is to be more neutral and use shades of white and ivory and then incorporate some colour. The message of the invitation is not just in the text we read but in its appearance as well. A black and white invitation screams ‘formal wedding’; the lace and pearl design is for the traditional brides with all the wedding trimmings; the simple postcard is for the no fuss couple.
So, the next time you open your mail box to find a wedding invitation, take the time to look at it from this point of view and you will be surprised just how much you can discover.

I don't work at Christmas-time; it's family time and my camera sits idle all through December, apart from family photos. But that doesn't mean people don't get married at Christmas- in the last two years I have had to suggest other photographers to three couples who were geting married on 25th December.
My first assumption was that they were probably from non-Christian families, but I was wrong about that… one Catholic couple and two Protestants, and all getting married in Church. Bet none of them ever forget their Anniversaries!
Christmas and Wedding Anniversaries are excellent reasons to give a gift to someone you love, and it puts me in a giving mood, too: so this year, anyone who books their photography with Practicaps Weddings before the end of January will receive a $200 discount on their photography and a digital phopt frame to show off their wedding photos. That's on top of our other free services and discounts, like our free make-up and hairstyling, and our "Second Time Around" package for those who have been married before..
Generally, we shoot about 30 weddings each year. There are still about a dozen days still to be filled in the second half of the year, but wihile apart from a few odd days, most of the first half of 2012 is already booked out. Many other professional photographers are in the same position – Which doesn't mean you should rush out and book just anyone in case you miss out; but it does mean you should be doing your research, including checking out websites and talking to your recently-married friends about the experience they had with their photographers.
The right photographer brings a lot more than technical skill and artistry to your wedding day – they are going to spend more time with you on your special day than anyone else, and the years of experience that they bring with them can make the world of difference – and not just to the photos! Having the "wrong" photographer, on the other hand, can be a disaster.
So – look carefuilly, be sure you really like their photography, make time to meet those whose work you admire to be certain you get on well together, and then get a contract signed to lock in the day. Just don't leave it much longer if 2012 is your year.

Being Flower Girl For A Day….
l was a flower girl when l was a a youngester (not soooooooooo long ago – lol)
l can still remember the "blue chiffon" dress l wore and my brother whom was page boy was in a black suit, we looked so cute…
The photo is still one of my favourites of all time and it was actually an inspiration for "Cute 4 Suit"
Now l am older and wiser, l realize being a flower girl can be a huge deal. It can be stressful for the bride, create tension in the wedding party and make or break a young girls day!
But it can be soooooooooooooooo much fun too.
We recently did a photo shoot on a farm with the fabulous Gilly from Whimsy Studios. Getting the kids outdoors was great for me fitting in the studio, but also gave the kids a sense of freedom and the Gilly the perfect images for our collection.
Suddenly they forgot about the pressure of the photo shoot and began to play an explore. You have to admit the best camera shoots are the ones that naturally capture that perfect moment.
Wedding are the same, they are meant to be fun, a celebration of love and the start of a new journey.
So let girls be girls, with our "Sisne Dress" she is dressed like a princess, can dance like a swan and has the magic powers of a fairy….. now that alone makes for some fun. And she still looks like a totally stunning, elegant flower girl in our gorgeous layered dress.
Make sure she can move in the dress, she can run, jump, hop, play and dance!
Let her be captured freely giving you a cuddle and savoring the moment of this special day.
As a bride, your are the flower girls "queen" – take her under your wing, if possible take her to get the dress, accessories and shoes. This will give her an immediate sense of belonging and she will be counting down the days until she can put her gorgeous "Sisne" dress on…
Every young girl l know wants to have her hair done, nails painted and makeup applied, so book her in. She doesn't need to hang at the salon all day but a girlie day spa does wonders for any age.
Introduce her to her man for the day, the page boy. Try and do this prior to the wedding day, kids are shy when they meet so break the ice in a relaxed and playful enviroment…
Ok, so the dress is sorted, the makeup and hair booked, what next…… relax and delegate….
Can her mum dress her, or if she is the wedding party, where is nanna?
Buddy her up with someone she loves, not likes, loves. There "job" is to dress her and help her get ready. Someone that will fuss over her without stressing or bossing her around.
When she is dressed give her a token gift, something from you to her that she can wear or carry today and cherish after…
Now lets get her to her leading man and with you hot in on her heels you will make a gorgeous entry that will be charming, relaxed and perfect…..
Oh …. One last thing, get her pics taken first and then let her go run, jump, hop, play and dance!
